Yesterday morning, I met Yolanda and Saniego on the way towards the center of the City, the Zocalo, for breakfast to celebrate Saniego’s birthday. We stopped by the national post office which is a beautiful old building with ornate trimmings and old time elevators. We went to breakfast at La Casa Blanca which has existed since the early twenties and where my Abuelita Chata would go as a child to eat after church on Sundays.
Saniego had to go back to the apartment to go work, but Yolanda and I got to spend the whole day exploring the area around the Zocalo. There was a big celebration with Dancers for Festival de Tamales. In the center plaza where the cathedral is, we went to an art exhibition which was showing different historical nativity scenes. We also went to the first “mall” of Mexico City which is now a really extravagant hotel with a lot of history.
We then spent a really long time at an open air market. The long time was entirely my fault (Sorry yo!). Books are my weakness. I wanted to get some more books in Spanish to practice my reading comprehension. Here’s what I bought: Lidia Moreno by Antonio Ros, and anthology with two short novels by Mexican authors and El Principito (The Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I’m excited to use my new pride and prejudice bookmarks, which are SO cute from Santa (thanks Mamá).
Then we walked to a couple different art galleries and some spots that Yolanda wanted to see. And then we met up with Saniego again.
Today I read a lot more of the book that Marisa gave me. It is called The Secret (El Secreto) which I had seen before, but never was drawn to. But it has a very interest concept - it is saying that the secret to life is that what you think you bring to you, like begets like, and that our thoughts control our life. It suggests to think in the present tense what you want in your life. It is very esoteric and holistic mysticism. Also it calls for the elimination of negative thoughts. Basically when you say what you don’t want, you put that negative thought into the universe and according to the author, the universe doesn’t understand negatives. For example I don’t want to be late turns into I want to be late and then you are late. So what you have to do is ask what you do want in life. So this seems like a pretty good start for my journey in figuring out exactly what I want in life.
I went for a long walk to Parque Pilares and started reading Lidia Moreno. It took me forever to even get through the introduction because I still have been writing down all the words I don’t understand. As you can see in my pictures, I have a lot more words, and that’s just the ones that start with A, haha.
