26 January 2017

This morning I worked for about 45 minutes and produced 250 words on a piece of fiction. Then I walked to Hiper Lumen which is a fun store that has stationary, a print shop, and office supplies. I needed to get a plain sketchbook and a mechanical pencil so I could have something to write with while out and about.

I worked some more writing and produced about another 350 words on the piece of fiction. I then went on a walk to the Pharmacy and to the store. I then started reading a book called The Art of Character by David Corbett. It is a great book that challenges authors to bring characters from caricatures to living people. I have read it before but want to make a concerted effort to go through it again. Corbett emphasizes that building your characters “begins with an honest, unflinching understanding of yourself.” He gives great exercises at the end of each chapter to begin a reflective approach to your characters.

I went on a long walk to a park nearby. It has a walking track on it and in the center there are basketball courts and a playground. I read there for a while and people watched. I also caught up on some phone calls. Then I got some fresh tortillas for 6.5 pesos which in dollars is $0.30! Amazing and yummy!

I took a bunch of detours so I could get a sense for the streets around the apartment. It was great today because I feel fairly confident now that I won’t get too lost in a ten block radius, so that’s a start!
